Multi-Sensory Ideas

Hair Dryer and Snow Flakes
4:14pm Thursday, 5th August 2010

We are at the moment in the middle of our summer programme of Multi-Sensory Magic Residencies.  This year we are basing the work round the Michael Rosen story Going on a Bear Hunt.

One of the environments we create involves snow and Jill Goodwin introduced us to a great idea for gentle snow fall.  You [...]

Polar Landscape with Newsprint
Newsprint * is great for making quick environments. For example if we are telling a story about penguins or polar exploration we can transform the room into an Antarctic landscape in minutes by loosely screwing up handfuls of newsprint and scattering them across the floor. We could also cover [...]

Light Sensitive Pens
9:40am Sunday, 16th May 2010

This idea depends on being able to black out the room – or at least make it fairly dark.  You need:

light sensitive pens
springy sticks – withies [willow for basket making] are ideal
tape – masking tape for taping pens to sticks
large sheet of newsprint paper or similar
a directional light source – stage light great but domestic [...]

Fish that Swim and Fish that Fly
2:33pm Monday, 22nd February 2010

As regular readers will know we are at present rehearsing “Where The Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendac – which is the reason that this is a later than usual monthly Bite.  During the scene when Max sets off to sea in his little boat the participating students have the chance to touch the fish [...]

Rain Forest Jungle
3:32pm Friday, 15th January 2010

This environment is very suitable for involving the students in helping to set up the environment.

What is set up as your students enter the room

At the start
The students wait outside the door.  From inside come the sounds of the rain forest – a monkey chatters, parrots scream, rain pours down in torrents.  Anticipation builds as [...]

Throwing from a Wheel Chair
2:31pm Monday, 7th December 2009

Thanks to Chris Holland who told me about this month’s bite.  Chris teaches at Fairfields School in Northampton and he told me how he enables some students, who use wheel chairs, to participate in throwing events during PE.  He attaches a length of guttering – the sort that goes on the roof of your house [...]

multi-sensory theatre with children with profound and complex needs
This is an article that appeared in SEN magazine in the current issue.  I thought you might be interested in it – so here it is
This is the first in a series of three articles by Christopher Davies, artistic director of Bamboozle.  In it he describes a [...]
