"How to Grab the Attention of Your Students and Keep them Interested"
A Masterclass in Facilitating a Role with Christopher Davies
artistic director of Bamboozle.
As a teacher in a special school or a freelance practitioner you will recognise that getting the attention of your pupils and holding it is the single most important thing we need to be able to do. No amount of wisdom and brilliant ideas will help us if none of them is listening! We have all had times when we have been exasperated because our pupils just don't seem to want to know!
The single most powerful way that I have come across to grab students' attention and keep hold of it is to use a role - that is, someone pretending to be a character. This training week is entirely focussed on just how you do that. Before I explain exactly what you can expect to get out of the training let me share what some other practitioners and teachers say about Bamboozle trainings.
"This has been a real eye-opener for me and a liberating learning experience. The atmosphere has been truly non-judgemental and the outcomes far exceeded my expectations. You can nurture and challenge at the same time - how is that done! Thank you." Laura Guthrie - theatre designer and facilitator. Nottingham.
"Dear Christopher. I wanted to write to tell you how amazing the training week with Bamboozle was. In this industry I often find myself drowned by having to work in a million places at once, mixing with teachers and pupils for just a couple of minutes before reeling off the same stale workshop plans...
I can't tell you how much this week has helped me ... it has changed my approach to reaching my students and has re-lit the fire for teaching again ... that is priceless. You are both inspiring individuals and I wish you all the best in the future". Arjunan Manuelpilla - workshop leader and poet. London.
"Inspirational, thought provoking, challenging and inclusive. Your enthusiasm and commitment shines through and is infectious. A wonderful day - I wish it could have been longer. You gave us space and time to be involved." Susan Pesic-Smith - assistant headteacher, Westgate School, Leicester.
This Masterclass in How to Facilitate a Role will take place at Curve, Leicester's state of the art new theatre, and runs from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th of November 2009.
Okay, so what can you expect to get out of it if you decide to attend this masterclass week? [If you do choose to sign up you will be one of only 12 people as we have limited the number of places so that everyone gets lots of individual attention]
During the week you will learn:
-
ways that we can ensure that we build rapport with our students - this is a crucial part of engaging with the group and is very, very simple once you know how.
-
one of the best kept secrets of engaging a group of students - how to get them hanging off your every word
-
ways you can keep total control of the drama and of the students
-
how to find out what students are most likely to respond to
-
discover ways to give students real decision making input very early in the session
-
the impact that saying very little can have on how a group of students respond
-
find out how to give students access to drama on many different levels
-
discover how, by you doing much less, your students can achieve much more
-
ways of deepening your work with a role
-
the keys to the relationship between facilitator and role - and what to do and not do in order for it to give you the outcomes you want
-
ways to use an inexperienced person [maybe a member of staff who has never done anything like it before] as a role and still get great results
-
how to combine theory with practice immediately and receive clear and honest feedback from me
-
how to use advanced language strategies to get students to engage with you in situations where attention, let alone engagement, seemed impossible
-
how to work with different levels of understanding and ability within the same group
-
ways to build tension and anticipation in your sessions
-
simple ways to create an atmosphere whether you are in a purpose built theatre studio or a standard classroom
-
how to use the full range of your voice to create immediate impact
-
how you can relax and perform at your best
Key Features of the Masterclass.
-
Practical sessions. You will lead 2 sessions with students who have learning difficulties. One as the facilitator and one as the role. These sessions will be discretely filmed. You will have your own copy of the DVD to keep.
-
Personal tutorials. After each of your practical sessions you will have a personal tutorial with me. We will use the DVD so that we can examine in detail any part of the session. Tutorials will be audio recorded and you will get a copy of the audios of your two tutorials to keep.
-
Observe others working. Many teachers and freelance practitioners rarely get the opportunity to observe and learn from other skilled colleagues. Despite working in a school the actual act of teaching/leading a workshop can be a lonely business. During this week you will observe ten sessions led by the other facilitators. This will give you a mass of great ideas of ways to work with a group.
-
Watch a session. During the week you will watch the DVD of a session led by me and Sue Pyecroft, who is the creative director of Bamboozle. In it we use a puppet as a role and create a story from scratch with a group of students who have learning difficulties. This DVD is being launched in the New Year and will not have been seen by anyone until this week.
-
spend a week with likeminded practitioners and teachers who are all excited about what working with a role can offer young people
-
have continuous access to me throughout the week - opportunities to ask questions, receive guidance at every stage of the process and challenge your own thinking
-
opportunity to examine in detail your own practice and fine tune your workshop skills
As well as everything I have talked about above, at the end of the week you will have:
-
Emailed access to me after the training has finished to discuss any sessions you lead
-
3 audio CDs recorded at the National Theatre/Bamboozle training week - "Remove The Judgement - Remove the Fear" "How to Structure a Workshop" and "Questions that Empower"
-
DVDs of your 2 sessions - one with you as facilitator and one when playing a role
-
Audio CDs of the personal tutorials with me after your 2 sessions
-
The Facilitator's Masterclass manual - with detailed notes from each of the seminars
